Natura 2000

Next to the being built settlement is the Kalviai restored plot (area 37,71 ha., Klaipėda county, Klaipėda district).
The objective of the territory – to preserve the extincting bird species in EU – common tern (Sterna hirundo). These birds most often hatch in colonies of various sizes, often together with seagulls. In Kalviai quarry up to 250 couples of terns hatch. Such bird species being important in EU are also found there – spotted crake(Porzana porzana) and Little tern. Besides them, other two bird species included in the Red book are found there – Black-neck Grebe (Podiceps nigricollis) and shoveller (Anas clypeata). Together with terns a rich redhead seagulls (Larus ridibundus) colony hatch – over 1500 couples.
Regarding the closely situated „Natura 2000“ territory AB „Baltic Research“ is preparing the protected territory’s environment clearing plan on own initiative, which has planned means of how to reduce the negative effect of birds population in that territory.
